Notes
Also, instead of fresh Feijoas, you could use frozen ones. You need to defrost them first.
If you don’t have Feijoas, you could make an apple, peach, or plum crumble.
Ingredients

Feijoas
This recipe features the Feijoas, the main star of our dish. Fresh feijoas are used in my recipe, but frozen Feijoas can be used. And if you will be using frozen feijoas, then you will defrost them before using them in this recipe. You can use any other fruit, like apples, peaches, or what you would like. It’s up to you, but my Irresistible Feijoas Crumble recipe works with any fruit you like.
Sugar
For my Feijoa crumble recipe, I like using brown sugar because it adds a lovely caramel flavor to the topping. It balances the natural tartness of the Feijoa and bakes into a golden, crispy crumble that’s hard to resist. If you prefer, you can easily swap it with any granulated sugar you have on hand.
Flour
You can replace it with any gluten-free flour if needed. I usually use self-raising flour, but if you don’t have any on hand, just mix 1 teaspoon of baking powder into 1 cup of plain flour; it works perfectly.
Butter
Always choose the best quality butter you can find; nothing else compares, and there’s truly no substitute for real butter.
Make The Feijoa Crumble In A Few Simple Steps
Prepare The Feijoas

Wash the feijoas thoroughly, then slice them in half. Scoop out the soft pulp using a spoon and place it into a bowl. Discard the skins and repeat until you have the amount of pulp needed for your recipe.

We’ll let the oven do the work of softening the feijoas, which keeps things easy and reduces cleanup. As you finish preparing the pulp, set your oven to 350°F (180°C) using the fan-forced setting so it’s ready to go.

Place the feijoas in the preheated oven and allow them to gently soften until they’re warm and starting to bubble. While the fruit cooks, you’ll have plenty of time to prepare your crumble topping.
Make The Crumble Mix

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and sugar. Add the cold butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture forms coarse, crumbly pieces. Set aside until the fruit is ready.
Putting The Feijoa Crumble Together

Once the feijoas are soft and bubbling, remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the top, making sure to cover the fruit completely. It’s now ready to go back into the oven for baking.

Gently scatter the crumble mixture over the warm feijoas. Return the dish to the oven and bake until the topping turns golden and crisp.
Enjoy

Serve the crumble warm and dig in while it’s fresh from the oven. We enjoy our Feijoa crumble with a little cream, and sometimes even a scoop of ice cream to make it extra delicious.
What does feijoa taste like in a crumble?
Feijoa has a sweet, fragrant flavor with hints of pineapple, guava, and strawberry. When baked in a crumble, it becomes soft, jammy, and beautifully aromatic.
Do I need to peel the feijoas before using them?
No, you don’t have to peel them. You can simply scoop out the flesh. Some people like to use the skins for extra texture and flavor, but the flesh alone works perfectly.
What can I substitute for feijoa?
If feijoas aren’t available, you can substitute with apples, pears, or a mix of apple and pineapple for a similar tropical tang.
How do I make the crumble topping extra crispy?
Add a bit more butter or use cold butter cut into the flour. You can also mix in oats or chopped nuts for crunch.
What should I serve with feijoa crumble?
It’s delicious with vanilla ice cream, custard, whipped cream, or a simple dollop of yogurt.
Can I use brown sugar instead of white sugar?
Yes! Brown sugar adds a deeper caramel flavor and makes the crumble topping even more delicious.
