How To Make Our Easy Cabbage Fritters
We’ll begin by finely chopping the cabbage or if you prefer, you can grate it for a finer texture.

Place the shredded cabbage in a mixing bowl, sprinkle with a bit of salt, then cover and let it rest for about 30 minutes. The salt helps draw out moisture, softening the cabbage and making it easier to digest.
Important: Do not discard the liquid that collects at the bottom of the bowl, it helps bind the fritter mixture together later.

While the cabbage is resting, you can prepare the rest of the ingredients. I like to use this time to grate a carrot (optional, but adds nice color and sweetness) and get my spice mix ready. For this recipe, I used cumin, paprika, chili powder, and turmeric but feel free to adjust the spices to your taste. If you’re not a fan of chili, just skip it and use extra paprika instead. Next, I combine my spices with gram (chickpea) flour to create a flavorful base. Once the cabbage has softened, add in the grated carrot and some freshly chopped coriander. If you’re not into coriander, parsley makes a great substitute.
Now it’s time to add our spiced flour mixture to the chopped vegetables. Mix everything well until combined. If the batter feels too thick, simply add a little water just enough to reach a smooth, spoonable consistency.

For frying, I like to use a non-stick pan and a small amount of cooking oil to achieve that perfect golden, crispy texture.
Scoop small portions of the batter into the pan and flatten them slightly. Cook the fritters on both sides until beautifully light golden brown; this usually takes about 5 minutes per batch.

Once cooked, keep the fritters warm while you finish frying the rest of the batter. They’re best enjoyed fresh and crispy.
Serve these quick and easy cabbage fritters warm with your favorite dipping sauce or chutney. They make a perfect light meal or a crispy side dish for any occasion.

FAQ’S
What are cabbage fritters made of?
Cabbage fritters are made with shredded cabbage, flour, eggs (or egg substitute), and simple spices. They are pan-fried until golden and crispy, making a delicious snack or light meal.
Can I make cabbage fritters without eggs?
Yes! You can replace eggs with flaxseed meal mixed with water or a few tablespoons of mashed potatoes or chickpea flour to bind the mixture. This makes them perfect for a vegan option.
How do I make my fritters extra crispy?
Make sure to squeeze out any excess water from the shredded cabbage before mixing the batter. Also, fry them on medium-high heat until both sides are golden brown for the perfect crunch.
What kind of flour works best for cabbage fritters?
All-purpose flour is most common, but you can also use chickpea flour, rice flour, or whole wheat flour for a healthier or gluten-free version.
Can I make the batter ahead of time?
It’s best to prepare and fry the fritters fresh. However, you can chop the vegetables in advance and store them separately in the fridge to save time.
Why are my fritters soggy?
If your fritters turn out soggy, it’s likely due to too much moisture in the cabbage or low frying temperature. Always drain the cabbage well and make sure your oil is hot enough before frying.
